Abstract:

Ladybugs and spiders are natural enemies of many pests in Agriculture and Forestry. Dongguan is a traditional litchi cultivation area in Guangdong Province, which is located in the coastal hilly area south to the Tropic of Cancer. The local soil is fertile, the climate is warm, with plenty of sunshine and rainfall. There are abundant ladybug and spider resources in litchi orchards, with high potentials for research and development. This dataset includes ladybug and spider data surveyed in the Dongguan litchi orchard surveying site, Guangdong, from 2018 to 2021. Specimens of the two kinds of natural enemies were collected using sweeping net and malaise trap. Information on timing and location for surveys, environmental conditions, and natural enemy species in litchi orchards, their density, picture and specimens were provided. Collected ladybugs belong to 11 genera, 5 subfamilies, and the spiders belong to, 27 genera, 15 families. This dataset can be used to investigate population dynamics of ladybugs and spiders in litchi orchards, and can also be analyzed together with cultivating operations, to promote strategies in litchi pest and diseases management. The establishment and sharing of this dataset also provide data support to further investigate biodiversity and agroecological conservation in litchi orchards.
